How to keep the mainsheet from fouling on the transom or rudder head.
Technique plays a lot in keeping the mainsheet clear.  The problem exists on a lot of boats from small like Lasers to large like Farr 40's (This past season I saw a Far 40 with a bent wheel post and wheel after the mainsheet warped around it in a jibe).  Each have developed a technique to prevent the mainsheet from fouling.  In the Laser I learned that if you give the main sheet a swift tug (jerk, snap), just as the boom crosses in a jibe this will cause the mass of the loose sheet to fly upward clearing itself from the corners of the transom and rudder head.  This works the same on the Scot as Harry has been said to explained.   I find that if you can get the block to stand up on its own then the sheet is less likely to foul by hanging over in the already fouled position.  I use the large Harken spring between the rudder bail and block.  The spring might have to be stretched to make the spring long enough to provide the force to hold the block in the up right position.  12-14-05

The 2005 NERD: Congratulations to Dan Vought and his crew Ted on becoming the 2005 North East Regional District Champions.  Congratulations also to Jackie and Bruce Cattanach on winning the Challenger Division.  All boats left the dock on Saturday, but after reaching the starting area, the West South West winds piped up to a steady 12-18 knots with gusts close to 30.  The race committee postponed, and competitors returned to the dock in anticipation of starting the racing after lunch.  Mother Nature was uncooperative, so racing was abandoned for the day.  Sunday was overcast, with off-and-on light rain with East North East winds at 8-10 knots.  The shifty winds made for many position changes, keeping the competitors on their toes.  The race committee did an excellent job of getting in three windward leeward races with five legs each.  Click here for photos, Results  10-9-05

I am looking for photos of my new spinnaker, blue with several stars.  Steve Bellows from Schurr sails did a very nice job making my custom spinnaker.  I would like to send him a picture, so he can see it in action.  If you have photos you would like to share please email them to fs2929@optonline.net. Thank You, Dan  8-15-05

Congratulations to Eduardo Cordero, Paul Jon Paten, and Mathew Cottrill for an excellent regatta and capturing the Best Overall Performance by a  One Design Boat in addition to their first place in the 16 boat Flying Scot fleet at the Long Island Sound YRA Championship held at Cedar Point YC in conjunction with Riverside YC in Connecticut.   This is the second year in a row for the Flying Scot class to win the Overall One Design trophy.  Harry Carpenter won it in 2004.   Eduardo, visiting from South America,  has been sailing a Flying Scot this summer as practice for the US Sailing Champion of Champions Championships to be held later this year in Detroit.  There were six races sailed over two days.  Conditions on Saturday were for the most part a southerly 8 to 12 with moderate chop.  John Cooke and Mark Reifenhauser started the first race with a commanding lead and led the fleet until being overtaken by Cordero within a boat length of the finish.  Cordero seamed unstoppable until the fourth race where Dan and Christine Neff won the start and managed to stay between Cordero and the finish.  Sunday started with a light rain and some heavy cells of rain passing well south of the racing area.  Winds were 5 to 10 out of the South, but died for a short time between race 5 and 6.   In race 5 Dave Chard and Lynn Petrocelli were battling with the Neffs for second, and for a short time found themselves on top, but race 6 secured the second place overall finish for Neff with Chard third, and Josh Goldman finishing forth.   Click here for photos,  Results , 8-29-05

Congratulations to Peter Whiting and Jim Kusche on becoming the 2005 New York Lakes District Champions, and congratulations to Dan and Christine Neff for being the overall winners in the open fleet.  Conditions were ideal for the 17 boat fleet.  Saturday winds were shifty out of the SW to NW at 8 to 12 all day.  The race committee did an excellent job of keeping the course true, and got in four windward leeward races.  The shifty conditions created many position changes for the competitors, keeping them on their toes right up to the finish.   The club members prepared a delicious Saturday night dinner of barbeque chicken and ribs with a variety of salads and desserts.  Sunday morning started out with a mix of heavy and light rain right up to the first gun, at which time the sun began to peek out.  Again, the winds were W to NW at 8 to 12 to generate an ideal setting for three races with lots of position changes.  Most would consider these to be the toughest conditions to sail in, but at the same time, they made for a great regatta.  Click here for photos, Results, 8-22-05

Congratulations to Dan and Christine Neff on winning the 19th Invitational Saratoga Springs Regatta, and congratulations to Ed Summerfield and Herb Lindsey on winning the Challenger Fleet.  The 44 boat fleet, 24 championship and 20 challenger, enjoyed 5 races each under great conditions.  The Race committee mixed it up between Olympic and Goldcup courses. It was a nice change from the windward leeward courses sailed most of the time.   The conditions were ideal, except for the high heat and humidity making the breezy 8 to 10 feel darn right hot on Saturday.  A system of small thunderstorms, luckily far off in the distance, dropped the temperature a little on Sunday to produce a nice Northerly breeze.  Click here for photos,    8-15-04

Congratulations to Ralph Coffill (4814) and Gina Lindahl for becoming the 2005 Greater New York Flying Scot District Champions.
Conditions were abnormal for the Seaside Park sailing area.  Instead of the usual 15 to 18 kt sea breeze by mid-afternoon, the races were started under a light and variable 3 to 8 kt. easterly with 30 degree wind shifts.  The first race ended early due to the time limit, leaving the top boats a little disappointed, but it was lucky for Coffill, who was at the back of the back after the second downwind leg.  The second race started very quickly with no change in conditions.  Coffill found himself in the middle of the 21 boat fleet to fight his way up to 8th.  Conditions remained unchanged for the third race, but Coffill started and never looked back.  Finishing 1st to give him 9 points.  Turns out 1st, 2nd, 3rd, and 4th all had 9 points giving the race committee a little extra work to determine the champion.  Coffill found himself on top by finishing first in the last race.  Ira and Cathy Cohen received 2nd, , Josh Goldman and Dan Chard received 3th, Joe Thorpe with son Kevin and girlfriend Valerie Bonczek received 4th, and Paul-Jon Patin and Matthew Cottrell received 5th with 11 pts.  Click here for photosResults 8-2-05

Flying Scot Greater NY
District Championships

Congratulations to Marc and Marcus Eagan, our new North American Champions.  In extremely close racing, three teams tied in the Championship Division.  Based on tie breaking rules, Bill Draheim, Stewart Draheim, and Scott Mauney took second place, while Kelly and Heidi Gough were third.
In similarly tight racing in the Challenger Division, Paul Labute and Jim Hockert won by a single point.  8-2-04 More...

We would like to Thank Bill Ross for a great job as FSSA President, and to welcome Glen Shafer (5213) is our new FSSA President. Complete Officer list at FSSA.com 8-2-05
